With Republicans controlling both the White House and Congress, U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley says voters expect lawmakers to deliver results before the November midterm elections.
In an interview with Missourinet, the Missouri Republican said Congress should act on energy costs before leaving Washington for the campaign trail.
“I hope that we won’t leave town before we vote on getting rid of the gas tax and making sure that we bring down the cost of energy,” Hawley said. “I mean, diesel is way too high in the state of Missouri and across the country. Regular gas way too high. It is driving up the cost of everything. Congress can do something about that.”
Hawley said suspending the federal gas tax would provide immediate relief to drivers.
“We could take 20, 30 cents off the top right now for every gallon by suspending the federal gas tax,” he said. “We ought to do that and we shouldn’t leave here until we do. But when it comes to gas and diesel right now, the cost is just astronomical.”
Congress is expected to complete most of its legislative work before lawmakers spend much of October and early November campaigning ahead of Election Day. Hawley said lowering fuel and energy costs should remain a top priority during the final weeks before the midterms.
