Much of Missouri is under a heat advisory as the hottest weather of the summer settles across the state. National Weather Service meteorologist Jordan Didio in Springfield said temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to upper 90s Monday and Tuesday, with heat index values ranging from 100 to 110 degrees.
Didio said a combination of high temperatures and humid air is creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.
“A ridge of high pressure that is expanding over much of the United States right now basically acts to kind of trap heat underneath that ridge,” Didio said. “It’s just hot, stagnant, moist air that is going to be in place here for the next couple of days.”
Health experts are urging Missourians to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, including drinking plenty of water, limiting strenuous outdoor activities and seeking air-conditioned spaces during the hottest parts of the day.
Relief is expected to arrive later this week. Didio said cooler and drier air should move into much of the state late Tuesday night into Wednesday.
“Looking at temperatures for Wednesday, we actually have highs in the mid to upper 80s, which is a little bit more seasonable,” Didio said. “Without much lower humidity, our heat index values are going to be pretty similar to those temperatures in the mid to upper 80s.”
Until then, forecasters say dangerously hot conditions will continue across Missouri, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.
