Blunt Questions Nixon’s Handling of Prison Abortion Case

October 19, 2005 By admin Leave a Comment

Governor Matt Blunt says he’s disappointed the state lost its case to keep a female prisoner from getting an abortion. And, he’s disappointed in how the case was handled. Blunt is not happy with how Attorney General Jay Nixon defended the state in the matter. Blunt believes the primary defense should have been that it would be a violation of state law to spend tax dollars to transport the female inmate for an abortion. Instead, Nixon’s primary argument was that this was a security risk and against Corrections Department policy. Nixon declined the Missourinet’s repeated invitations to speak on this story, but his office issued a written statement calling the defense appropriate and aggressive, adding a vigorous defense will continue as the litigation goes forward.
