The Royals fell to the Tigers 5-2 last night to earn a split in the four-game series. Mike Maroth held Kansas City to six hits. Detroit jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed. Angel Berroa and Mike Sweeney drove in a run apiece, with a double and sacrifice, in the second inning to get within a run. Royals’ starter Darrell May was the loser dropping to 4-10. Sweeney’s averaged dropped two points with an 0-2 performance. That dropped his batting average down to .340, which puts him in a tie with Manny Ramirez for the A.L. batting race.
