End Of An Era, Burnett Resigns

April 23, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

SMS Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Cheryl Burnett announced that she was stepping down from the position she’s held for 15 years. Burnett said she has coaching goals that couldn’t be reached at SMS. In her time, she turned the Lady Bear program into one of national prominence and local pride. Her first two seasons in Springfield produced losing records, but her last 13 were all winners. In 1992 and 2001 she lead Southwest to the Final Four. There were concerns of her departure when she cancelled recruting visits last week. Burnett says she came to the decision last Wednesday. Though she has nothing lined up at the time, Burnett says she’ll coach again. She was 319-136 won a combined fifteen Missouri Valley regular season and conference tournament titles.
