(Jefferson City, MO) – A Missouri House bill has been filed that would criminalize teachers and school counselors if they provide supports to children who have a “social transition.”

Rep. Jamie Gragg, R-Ozark, is proposing the bill regardless of whether the support is in the form of material or other resources.

Under the proposal, “social transition” includes the process by which a person adopts the name, pronouns, and gender “expression”, such as clothing or haircuts, that match the child’s gender identity and not the gender of the child’s sex at birth.

If accused of “contributing to a social transition,” Missouri teachers and counselors could be charged with a class E felony. If they are found guilty, they would be required to be placed on the state’s sex offender registry.

The legislation has not yet been assigned to a House committee.
