The sixth investigation into the cause of the December, 2005, Taum Sauk reservoir collapse has begun at Public Service Commission headquarters in Jefferson City.

During Tuesday’s opening comments from the attorneys representing the various players, Robert Haar, representing reservoir owner AmerenUE, stated the company has already admitted fault in the collapse, and suggested political pressure might be responsible for this latest hearing on the accident.

That suggestion did not sit well with Kevin Thompson, the General Counsel for the P.S.C., who objected to the insinuation and allegation of impropriety. Public Service Commission Chairman Jeff Davis took exception, as well, reacting to the suggestion by offering a comment to AmerenUE President Thomas Voss.

"For a company that has a penchant for hiring people, you know, based on their political affiliation, for making controversial contributions," said Davis, "Don’t come in here and lecture me about the propriety of whether or we should have another investigation."

The P.S.C. probe is expected to conclude later this week or early next week.
