The days following the legislative session, each year, feature a lot of politicians and other interested parties celebrating their achievements. Occasionally, we hear from people who succeeded in preventing certain pieces of legislation from getting passed. Such is the case this year as a coalition of public school advocates marks the failure of private school tuition tax credit bills. Former House Speaker Jim Kreider, Executive Director of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association – a member of the coalition – believes the Legislature was wrong to consider this idea because its priority must rest with public schools. The legislative proposal would have restricted the voucher idea to the troubled Wellston, Kansas City, and St. Louis School Districts.
