The Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, the organization behind Amendment 2 – the Missouri Stem Cell Initiative that was approved by voters in November – is ready to fight a new effort to restrict stem cell research. That effort has been launched by Senator Matt Bartle of Lee’s Summit and Representative Jim Lembke of St. Louis. They’ve put forward a resolution that would have voters decide, in November of 2008, on a proposal that would gut much of the language of the initiative approved last month. The Coalition’s Connie Farrow flatly rejects arguments from Bartle and Lembke that approval of Amendment 2 came about because voters were not adequately informed. Farrow says it’s time for lawmakers to accept the results of the democratic process, to stop the electioneering, and for researchers to start working on cures.
