If some of the people on the Central Missouri state campus look a little sad today, it’s because they now have company. UConn’s 70-61 win over Tennessee in teh women’s national championship game gave the Huskies a men and women’s title in the same season. Until last night Central Missouri State was the only NCAA team to ever do that, when they won the Division II men and women’s championships in 1984. That season, the men beat St. Augustine 81-77 and finished with a record of 29-3. The women followed up with an 80-73 defeat of Virginia Union, putting together a 27-5 mark. Even though the Mules and Jennies aren’t the only team to win a men and women’s title in the same season anymore they do have one distinction still in tact. They are the only school to accomplish the feat on the same day and on the same court. When they won the titles, the men and women’s championship games were played consecutively in Springfield, Massachusetts.
