Defensive end Frazier calls out former offensive coaches as part of the reason for Mizzou’s bowl game loss (AUDIO)

December 28, 2017 By Bill Pollock

Missouri defensive end Marcell Frazier pointed the finger at two former offensive coaches following the team’s 33-16 loss to Texas on Wednesday at the Texas Bowl.

The focus of Frazier’s frustration centered around former offensive coordinator Josh Heupel and ex-offensive line coach Glen Elarbee. Heupel accepted the head-coaching position at Central Florida, with Elarbee joining him at the school.

“Realistically, Heupel left us in a bad position,” Frazier said. “It is what it is. And Elarbee left us in a bad position. As men they have to look in the mirror.”

“They let a whole bunch of teenage boys down, 18- and 19-year-olds,” Frazier continued. “They left and they have to do what’s best for their family, but I think it showed up a little bit today. We were doing things (on offense) we haven’t done since maybe the Auburn game. It showed up.  We practiced for almost a whole month without an O-coordinator or an O-line coach after having one of the most dominating offenses in the nation. It’s tough. I believe they let some guys down. They had to do what’s best for them. I don’t quite understand it.”

Drew Lock reacts to Texas coach Tom Herman mocking TD dance moves (VIDEO/AUDIO)

December 28, 2017 By Bill Pollock

Drew Lock is mature beyond his years.  Many Mizzou fans may feel even more mature than Texas head coach Tom Herman who was caught on video mocking Lock’s celebration after his third quarter touchdown pass.

Lock and his teammates created a celebration and a slogan after a touchdown, which came about from the rap song, “Secure the Bag,” Lock goes through his routine after each touchdown pass by pretending to strap on an invisible backpack. Here was Lock’s reaction after his first pass of the second half went for a 79 yard touchdown.

At the end of the Texas Bowl, Longhorns coach Tom Herman was shown celebrating/mocking with his players a move similar to Lock, but positioning his hands in the “Hook ’em” pose.

After the game, Lock said “When the head coach is mocking your dance move, you must be doing something right.”

Lock was asked if it was a classless move and he certainly understood how Herman’s players would appreciate the coach connecting on that level, but Lock noticed as well.

The Bill Pollock Show–#Mizzou bowl reactions-Rountree right on, Frazier making excuses and play calling examined (PODCAST)

December 28, 2017 By Bill Pollock

My thoughts and observations from the Mizzou bowl loss

1.  Joe Jon Finley did a pretty good job calling plays
2.  Freshman running back Larry Rountree said it better than anyone else
3.  I understand where he’s coming from, but I think Marcel Frazier is making excuses for the offense
4.  Did we buy into the Mizzou Black and “Fool’s” Gold we were being sold by Barry Odom?

Turnovers and mistakes too much for Mizzou to overcome in Texas Bowl

December 28, 2017 By Tim Fisher

Mistakes doomed the Missouri Tigers in falling to the Texas Longhorns 33-16 in the Academy Sports & Outdoors Texas Bowl.

Mizzou lost the turnover battle four to nothing, including one intercerption and three fumbles with one being a scoop-and-score touchdown for UT.  The Tigers were also penalized nine times for 86 yards.  On the Longhorns opening drive touchdown, Mizzou was penalized four times for forty yards.  The Tigers also allowed a safety on a missed snap out of the end zone.

Mizzou’s offense struggled with consistency, partly due to their starting field position.  Mizzou averaged starting at its own 16, compared to Texas starting at its own 41.  The main reason for this was the Texas Bowl MVP, Michael Dickson, the Longhorns punter that pinned Mizzou inside their 20 on ten of his eleven punts.  Dickson became just the second punter to ever be named MVP of a bowl game.

After entering the Texas Bowl on a six game winning streak, Mizzou’s season ends at 7-6.

The Bill Pollock Show–Drew Lock’s dilemma and my #Mizzou prediction for tonight’s Texas Bowl (PODCAST)

December 27, 2017 By Bill Pollock

Will NFL teams still come calling for Drew Lock even if the advisory committee told him to return for his senior season? (photo/Mizzou Athletics)

The NFL’s Draft Advisory Council suggested to Mizzou quarterback Drew Lock that he return to school for his senior season rather than enter the NFL Draft.  Lock says he’s not sure that’s the best course of action.

Why would this be the case?  If the NFL is telling Drew he won’t be a first or second round pick, why wouldn’t he wait another year to move up, increase his draft stock and sign a better NFL deal with better money in 2019?  It’s not that simple and I’ll explain.

My prediction for the Texas Bowl.  I’ll be honest I’m concerned with Joe Jon Finley calling plays. I’m also concerned about the long layoff for the offense, but with Texas having three of their top players sitting out as they look ahead to their future in the NFL, I think the Tigers will finally beat a team with at least a .500 record for the first time this season.

I’ll tell you how I see it playing out.

Thanks for listening.

#Mizzou football just one win away from history (AUDIO)

December 27, 2017 By Bill Pollock

A win over the Longhorns in Wednesday night’s Texas Bowl would be historic for Mizzou, as the 2017 Tigers would become just the second Power 5 team in college football history (Rutgers, 2008) to finish with eight wins after starting the season 1-5.  Mizzou has a six-game win streak in which their average margin of victory has been 30 points while scoring 45 or more points in each game for the first time in program history.  However, the numbers during the regular season may be misleading when you consider the following:

#Mizzou‘s 7 wins this year have come against teams with a combined record of 27-55

The Tigers 5 losses have come against teams with a combined record of 43-19.#MIZ football has not beaten a team yet with a .500 or better record. Texas would be the first this season.

— Bill Pollock (@missourisports) December 26, 2017

Mizzou head coach Barry Odom scoffed at those numbers at the Tigers’ press conference on Tuesday in Houston.

https://cdn.missourinet.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/12-26-Barry-6-on-criticizing-6-game-win-streak.mp3

The Tigers will be playing in their 32nd bowl game and a win over Texas would bring Mizzou’s all-time record to 16-16 in bowl games.  Mizzou has won its last three bowls: 2011 Independence,  2014 Cotton (2013 season) and the 2015 Citrus Bowl (2014 season).

The Bill Pollock Show–What will J’Mon Moore be wearing on his wrist for the Texas Bowl? Cuonzo has a few days but his team has been exposed. #Mizzou (PODCAST)

December 26, 2017 By Bill Pollock

The Missouri Tigers took in a rodeo this weekend while in the Houston area.  We doubt Terry Beckner Jr rode a bull although that would be a site.

Tim Fisher checks in from the Texas Bowl with an update on the Tigers.

I spoke with J’Mon Moore before the team left about a couple of wristbands he was wearing.  One helps keep him grounded, the other is in honor of one of his favorite places to eat!  You’ll hear from the Missouri City, TX senior.

Plus, Mizzou basketball was exposed by Stephen F. Austin and former SFA coach Brad Underwood who admitted to me, he certainly used his connections at his former school to help the Illini beat Mizzou.

Longhorns will be shorthanded when they face #Mizzou in the Texas Bowl

December 26, 2017 By Bill Pollock

The Missouri Tigers will facing a shorthanded Texas Longhorns team on Wednesday in the Texas Bowl after Longhorns head coach Tom Herman suspended three players.

Texas freshman running back Toneil Carter, junior tight end Garrett Gray and sophomore receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey have been suspended from the game for a violation of team rules.

Carter is the team’s fourth-leading rusher with 263 yards and three touchdowns.  Humphrey is the team’s second-leading receiver with 37 catches for 431 yards and a touchdown.

In addition to the three suspensions, The Longhorns will be without junior defensive tackle Chris Nelson who suffered an elbow injury during practice and three others who are skipping the game.  Offensive tackle Connor Williams, safety DeShon Elliott and cornerback Holton Hill have declared for early entry into the 2018 NFL draft and will not participate in the bowl game.

The Bill Pollock Show–Tilmon in the spotlight when #Mizzou plays the #Illini – plus my tribute to Dick Enberg (PODCAST)

December 22, 2017 By Bill Pollock

:00-1:35 I’m waiting for Mike Yeo to explode.  Veins coming out of his shiny bald head, did it happen last night?  The Blues lost for the 5th time in 6 games losing their third in a row on this hell hole trip to Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton. 3-2 the final, Blues gave up the winning goal with 56 to play.

5:10-10:30 If you didn’t catch my visit with Mizzou football’s Trystan Castillo, give a listen, it just a few minutes long. Great kid, who busted his tail to get in the starting lineup.

13:00-Andy Reid wants the Chiefs to play with a sense of urgency as they look to clinch the AFC West at home on Sunday.

14:15-My tribute to Dick Enberg

16:00 Saturday will be the 37th meeting between Illinois and Missouri on the hardwood.  They call it the Braggin’ Rights series and the Illini and Tigers meet in St. Louis every year just before Christmas.  Illinois has done much of the bragging, owning a 24-12 record with the Illini winning the last four.  Hear from Jordan Barnett, Kevin Puryear and Cuonzo Martin.

#Mizzou center Castillo admits coming from Webb City’s rich tradition of winning was a big adjustment (AUDIO)

December 21, 2017 By Bill Pollock

All through his life, Trystan Castillo has had to adjust.  The redshirt freshman, who earned the starting center job this past spring and in fall camp, had to get used to not winning every single game.  He chose Mizzou over Iowa State, Minnesota, Illinois and Rutgers and after struggling with a 4-8 record his freshman year (which he redshirted) and a 1-5 start to 2017, he’s beginning to see a glimpse of the success he saw while playing for state powerhouse Webb City.

“I lost two games in four years at high school,” Castillo told me after the Tigers wrapped up a Texas Bowl practice.  “After a couple of losses (at Mizzou), they start to wear on you.”

Castillo talks about dealing with losing and the hard work he put in last summer to win a starting job on an offensive line that heading into the 2017, was returning all five starters from the year before.
