First a quick update on the College Football Playoff rankings.  I predicted them correctly on Saturday night.  I will also tell you the field is down to ten.  There are really only ten teams left, maybe even just eight, who have a legitimate chance at the playoffs.

Mizzou fans are flipping out in the days after Monday’s win as to why Michael Porter Jr did not sit on the bench.

Fans are saying everything from not getting paid by boosters to Mizzou coaches hoping to avoid a media circus. (WHAAAT???)

I’ll debunk these crazy scenarios fans are dreaming up and then give you a more realistic explanation as to what is going on.

Finally, Irish soccer fans have showed me the best way to enjoy the sport.

Sophomore wide receiver Keyon Dilosa taken to jail early Wednesday morning and booked on third degree domestic assault.  He posted $1,000 bond.  According to Missourinet affiliate KTGR, a witness told police Dilosa got into an argument with his girlfriend just after midnight outside Harpo’s in downtown Columbia, and punched her in the face.

Former Missouri coach Gary Pinkel was on the radio in St. Louis and said that he is in remission.  Pinkel stepped down last November after announcing he was battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

“Physically I’m fine,” Pinkel said.

The honeymoon is over for Saint Louis Billikens basketball and their new coach Travis Ford who made quite a splash with his hiring. They dropped to 2-4 after last night’s 68-64 loss to Samford.  I’ve got a great soundbite from him…basically saying no more Mr. Nice Guy.

Mizzou fans want Kim Anderson gone…the same fan base that wanted Pinkel fired after two years.  The fans are coming after me after I said we should treat this year as year one of the K.A. era.

The responses:

Coaches don’t get mulligans
How many year 1’s does he get?
He doesn’t get a pass on losing out on all these in-state recruits. This is all on him.
Just gonna punt the two worst years in program history? He skates on that for free?

This comes from the same fan base that wanted Pinkel fired after his first two seasons when he couldn’t even get Missouri high school football coaches to visit with him.  So he went and brought it a kid from Ohio to be his QB.  By the way, those two young freshman for Anderson…Jackson and Hughes, where are they from?  Oh yeah…OHIO!

I lay this out as simple as I can as to why Anderson needs 2-3 more years.

Offense needs a little more consistency as Mauk returns to his home state in week two. Mizzou at Toledo, a first look (Google Hangout)

Kenton, OH native Maty Mauk returns to his home state on Saturday when the Tigers face Toledo.  In week two, I’d like to see Mauk get a little better pass protection and more consistency in the passing game.

Mauk three three touchdowns for 112 yards.  The rest of the game, he completed ten passes for 66 yards.  Tight end Sean Culkin had no catches and was targeted at least three times and Mauk only found six different receivers and two of those were running back Marcus Murphy and Russell Hansbrough.

That may be a sign of the lack of depth in this wide receiver corps.

Mizzou uses big runs to handle South Carolina (AUDIO)

Jabari Brown had 24 points and a career-best six assists and Jordan Clarkson added 22 points, helping Missouri handle South Carolina with an 82-74 victory on Saturday in front of a season high 12,033 at Mizzou Arena. Mizzou started the game on an 11-0 run and didn’t allow USC to score until the 15:44 mark.

The Tigers got a little sloppy with the ball toward the end of the game, and let a 20-point lead dwindle to six, but Frank Haith was quick to point out that in SEC play, “you don’t lead by 20 and beat a team by 40…give South Carolina some credit.”

What Mizzou did well is play solid defense, especially in the first half as the Gamecocks were held to just seven field goals and 26% shooting. The Tigers also shared the basketball, finishing with 18 assists.  The only consistent player for USC was Brenton Williams, who had a career-best seven 3-pointers and a season-best 32 points. Sindarius Thornwell fouled out late and had 14 points after totaling 25 points the previous two games.

The Tigers look to get above .500 in the SEC when they travel to Arkansas on Tuesday.

Peterson and Beanie beat the Rams

Patrick Peterson returned his second punt for a touchdown against the Rams and Beanie Wells set a Cardinals franchise record with with 228 yards rushing on 27 carries, including gains of 71 and 53 yards as Arizona beat the Rams 23-20 Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome.

Wells’ 53 yard run set up Jay Feely’s 22 yard field goal with less than five minutes to go to give Arizona the win. “I knew the team needed me — I was the one who put us in that situation in the first place when I lost the ball,” Wells said. On the possession before, his fumble led to a Rams touchdown by Brandon Lloyd from Sam Bradford that tied the game up at 20-20.

Freshman leaving behind Missouri State basketball

Missouri State men’s basketball coach Cuonzo Martin announced that forward Michael Porter requested and was granted a release from his scholarship.

The redshirt freshman from Sikeston, Mo., made the decision less than three months after a serious car accident ended with Porter being hospitalized. Porter cited that he wanted to be closer to home now that his basketball career is in jeopardy.

Coach Martin said, “We wish Mike the best and respect where his priorities are. He has been through a lot this year, and we are grateful for his contributions.”

Porter played in only six games after he missed time last season with a hamstring injury and an appendectomy. He averaged 3.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in a reserve role.
