Due to heavy rain in Kansas City, the final game in the 2015 MIAA Baseball Tournament was cancelled. With both Missouri Southern and Emporia State having only one loss and Missouri Southern being the highest-remaining seed, the Lions were named tournament champs and named the MIAA’s automatic qualifier to the 2015 NCAA Baseball Tournament.

The Lions opened the tournament with a win against Washburn and then defeated Emporia State in the winner’s bracket final on Friday. ESU, however, returned the favor and on the back of a walk-off home run and a four-run ninth, defeated the Lions in yesterday’s first championship game.

None of that mattered and the Lions are moving on.  15th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team was named the fifth seed at the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament to be played from May 14-17 in St. Cloud, Minn., hosted by St. Cloud State University.

The Lions will open up against the second seed Minnesota State-Mankato. Tournament play will open up on Thursday, but times have yet to be determined.

No worries for Emporia State.  They also made the NCAA tournament.

Other Missouri colleges to make the NCAA Tournament include Drury, William Jewell and Truman State.  Those three are playing in the Midwest Regional.

Sam McMahon

Missouri State University’s director of men’s basketball operations Sam McMahon will return to coaching at the collegiate level with today’s announcement from Missouri Southern State University of him as the Lions’ new assistant coach.  The Jefferson City, Mo., native will officially begin his duties for Coach Jeff Boschee in Joplin on July 1. McMahon recently completed his fourth season in the MSU program and had been the Bears’ video coordinator prior to serving in his current capacity since the 2012-13 season.

“I want to thank Coach (Paul) Lusk and the rest of the Missouri State coaching staff and administration for helping me develop professionally during my time here,” said McMahon. “I have learned so much from Coach Lusk and will always cherish our friendship. I’m so thankful for an opportunity to get back on the floor coaching. Coach Boschee is one of the best young coaches around, and I’m excited to learn from him.”

After a playing career at the University of Delaware (2004-08), McMahon landed an assistant coaching spot at Central Methodist University in 2009. In two years at CMU, he helped the Eagles to a combined 52-15 record with a pair of NAIA National Tournament appearances in that span.

His duties at Missouri Southern will include recruiting, scouting, practice and game-day coaching assignments and assisting with the day-to-day operations for the program. According to Lusk, a search for McMahon’s replacement at Missouri State will begin soon.
