Jontay declares for NBA draft, but doesn’t hire an agent

Mizzou basketball freshman forward Jontay Porter declared for the NBA draft, but has not hired an agent.  This leaves open the possibility of a return to Mizzou for his sophomore season.

Porter announced his decision in a tweet on the Mizzou basketball team’s account.

Jontay must decide by May 30 to enter the draft or return to school in order to retain his college eligibility. The draft is June 21 in Brooklyn, N.Y.  Michael Porter Jr. announced last week that he will enter the NBA draft and signed with Priority Sports, choosing to forego his college eligibility.

Michael will likely be a high lottery pick while Jontay has been projected as a late first- or early second-round pick.

It was one of the worst kept secrets in Columbia, but Jontay Porter, the younger brother of prized recruit Michael Porter Jr., made it official on Wednesday evening when he announced he would join the Tigers basketball program for the 2017 season.

The 6’10” forward rounds out the freshman class with includes Blake Harris, CJ Roberts and Jeremiah Tilmon.

Mizzou will open up the season at home on Friday, November 10 against Iowa State.

The much anticipated next big piece of the puzzle to fall into place for Cuonzo Martin’s team fell into place on Monday evening, when Jontay Porter announced via Twitter his decision commit to the University of Missouri. Porter teased on Twitter that part 2 was coming. Perhaps the news that he would reclassify and join the Tiger program early.

Porter follows in the footsteps of his older brother Michael Porter Jr. who announced his plans earlier this spring after both brothers led Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School to a state championship.  In 2016, he won a state title in Missouri for Father Tolton-Columbia.

J. Porter is a 5-star power forward, according to Rivals.com. He’s the 10th ranked player in the nation in the 2018 class.

First things first.  Mizzou basketball fans are hoping when the time comes for Michael Porter Jr. to make his college announcement, that he will choose to stay in his hometown and pick the Tigers over just about every top college basketball program in the country.

On Sunday, his younger brother Jontay beat him to the punch and took to Twitter to announce he is headed to the Washington Huskies for college.

The announcement is non-committing and 6’9 sophomore at Father Tolton Catholic has plenty of time to change his mind, but the head coach of the Huskies, Lorenzo Romar is the godfather of his brother Michael Jr.

Michael Porter Sr. is an assistant coach under Robin Pingeton at Missouri, where he will have two daughters play for the Tigers this fall.

Michael Jr. is the number two prospect in the country for 2017 according to Rivals.com.
