How bad are things for the 49ers? They’re benching Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert

November 3, 2015 By Bill Pollock

Following San Francisco’s 27-6 loss in St. Louis on Sunday to the Rams, the once proud franchise is cleaning house and reshuffling their lineup.

The 49ers (2-6) will bench quarterback Colin Kaepernick and go with Parkway West product and former Missouri Tiger Blaine Gabbert.  He will start at home against theAtlanta Falcons (6-2) on Sunday.

Kaepernick threw for 162 yards on 20-for-41 passing and rushed for 28 yards against the Rams.

When Gabbert starts he’ll be without a big target and a guy who can bail out QBs. On Monday, the 49ers traded tight end Vernon Davis to the Denver Broncos.

Gabbert is now in his fifth-year and was taken in the first round of the 2011 draft by Jacksonville.  Gabbert’s last action came in week 7 of last season.  He threw a 20-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of a blowout loss to Denver.

How effective do we believe Gabbert will be?  Not very.  In his career he has made 27 starts with a 5-22 record with a completion percentage of 53.2%.  He has thrown 24 interceptions and 23 touchdown passes.

Gabbert wins starting QB job for Jags

August 19, 2013 By Bill Pollock

Blaine Gabbert won the Jacksonville Jaguars’ starting quarterback job.  He will not play the rest of the preseason, because of a hairline fracture in his right thumb. Gabbert won’t need surgery, but will wear a protection while he heals.  Gabbert will be back in time to face the Chiefs in week 1 of the season.  Gabbert has completed 54 percent of his passes for 3,876 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He is 5-19 as a starter.

Former MU QB Gabbert named starter for Jags

September 21, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Blaine Gabbert, the Jacksonville Jaguars first round draft pick, was named their starter for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

Unfortunately for Blaine, his first start will come against Cam Newton, who was the overall number one pick, and has more passing yards in his first two game than any other rookie in NFL history. On the flip side, he’s taking on Carolina, the worst team last year and despite great numbers from Newton, are still 0-2.

Jacksonville is a mess. They cut projected starter David Garrard, who was scheduled to make $9 million, and handed the job to Luke McCown, who outplayed Garrard and Gabbert in the preseason. In week two, McCown was picked off four times and sacked for a safety.

Jags cut Garrard, but Gabbert not the starter

September 7, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Tired of his inconsistent play, Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio cut quarterback David Garrard who was projected to be the starter. However, that did not hand the starting job to former Mizzou quarterback Blaine Gabbert, but it certainly means we can see him playing in the NFL sooner than later.

How long before Gabbert starts in Jacksonville? (AUDIO)

September 1, 2011 By Bill Pollock

When a NFL team makes a quarterback a top 10 pick and pays a guaranteed $12 million for the next four years, you can bet it is going to be sooner than later.

When Blaine Gabbert last talked to the media, he mentioned how the rookies on that Jaguars team were going to be expected to make contributions early for that team. Now he concedes that David Garrard is the starting quarterback, but with a young team and not a lot of expectations, it will only be a matter of time before they find some way to get Gabbert involved.

The former Mizzou star and St. Louisan will see significant playing time tonight when the Jags host the Rams. Gabbert told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “It’s going to be fun. I grew up watching the Rams, a big Rams fan,” Gabbert said. “I’m looking forward to playing those guys. My family and a couple of friends will be down for that one.”

Gabbert has private workout with Cincy

April 26, 2011 By Bill Pollock

According to a report from the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Cincinnati Bengals, who have the fourth overall pick in this week’s draft had former Missouri Tiger quarterback Blaine Gabbert in for a private workout.

In addition to Gabbert, Cincy has also looked at Auburn’s Cam Newton, Florida State’s Christian Ponder and TCU’s Andy Dalton, but I don’t expect them to take Gabbert with the fourth pick and I really don’t see him being around for the second round when they might be open to taking a quarterback.

Gabbert answers the call at Mizzou’s pro day

March 17, 2011 By Bill Pollock

It was NFL Pro Day at Missouri and the big draw of course was quarterback Blaine Gabbert. On hand among the 125 NFL personnel were six NFL coaches including four who have a pick within the top eight of the draft. Gabbert answered any and all questions about his accuracy.

Watch some of Gabbert’s workout.

If anyone questioned his accuracy, that can be put to rest. Of his 50 passes, he missed on maybe two. They were on those deep route passes, but everything else was right there and the ball was zipping.

Listen to Blaine Gabbert’s post workout interview

The other thing that Gabbert said the coaches wanted to see was him working out of the snap from under center and taking three, five and seven step drops. His footwork was great.

The NFL coaches who were there…Denver’s John Fox, Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis, Tennessee’s Mike Munchak, San Francisco’s Jim Harbaugh, Minnesota’s Leslie Frazier, and the Jets’ Rex Ryan.

Gabbert’s “luck” getting even better

January 7, 2011 By Bill Pollock

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, who many pick as the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in April’s NFL draft, announced he will stay in school and play his redshirt junior season. Could this move Blaine Gabbert up to possibly the number one spot?

In a statement late Thursday, Luck said, “I am committed to earning my degree in architectural design from Stanford University and am on track to accomplish this at the completion of the spring quarter of 2012.”  His father, former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck, said: “This is a win-win for him. He gets to spend another year at Stanford, be part of team that will be highly ranked again next year, finish his degree and enjoy Palo Alto. It’s not like the NFL is going anywhere.”

The Carolina Panthers who have that first pick in the NFL draft indicated they would be interested in drafting Luck if he decided to leave school. I know the one person who woke the happiest person in the sporting world today…Blaine Gabbert.  The former Mizzou quarterback has been projected as a top 10 pick already, a potential move up to the number one slot would also bump up his signing bonus.
