Missouri congressman to present medals to late veteran’s family on Fourth of July (AUDIO)

July 4, 2019 By Brian Hauswirth

The family of a deceased southern Missouri veteran will be presented with his military service medals during a Fourth of July event in Salem.

U.S. Rep. Jason Smith, R-Salem, will be presenting the medals to Deck Hall’s family members. Smith says the family contacted his office, seeking assistance.

“Well it’s a great honor whenever we are able to track down the medals and awards for our veterans who never received them or they may have lost them,” Smith says.

Congressman Smith tells Missourinet the late Deck Hall earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Tonight’s presentation will take place at the Dent County Courthouse, just before the Fourth of July fireworks display.

The Salem event is one of several celebrations Congressman Smith will be attending today across his sprawling district, which contains 30 counties in southeast and south-central Missouri.

One of the most popular Fourth of July celebrations in southeast Missouri takes place in the small town of Oran, which is south of Cape Girardeau.

Today’s 108th Oran picnic includes music and fireworks. Congressman Smith will be attending the event, meeting with constituents about various issues. He says he frequently receives questions from constituents about Social Security issues and veterans benefits.

“You know southeast Missouri is all about God, country and family, and the Oran picnic is a prime example,” says Smith.

The event includes a buffet-style dinner at the Guardian Angel Knights of Columbus Hall. Fr. Randy, the church pastor, tells Missourinet they expect to feed about 1,000 people at today’s dinner, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Congressman Smith agrees with the late Congressman Bill Emerson: the Oran Fourth of July picnic has the best fried chicken anywhere in the world. He says the event is fun for all ages.

“This is the 108th annual Oran picnic. You can find horseshoe tournaments, cornhole, music, fireworks, wagon rides,” Smith says.

The dinner also includes roast beef and numerous desserts.

Congressman Smith will also travel to Poplar Bluff today and to the small town of Ellington, which is in Reynolds County. Smith will recognize the Ellington Whippet baseball team for that school’s first state championship in any sport.

Hayti, Trinity Catholic and Vianney take home Saturday’s Show-Me Bowl championships

December 2, 2018 By Bill Pollock

Class 5–Vianney over Fort Osage 28-14.  Vianney (12-2) won its second state championship in school history, in the last three years scoring 28 unanswered points after the Indians jumped out to a 14-0 lead.  Fort Osage was playing in their fourth Show-Me Bowl final in the last decade.   The Indians were runner-up to Webster Groves in 2009 and Kirkwood in 2012, before topping Chaminade in 2015.

Class 3–Trinity Catholic over Cardinal Ritter 45-19.  It’s the Titans first state championship in school history. Running back Reggie Love rushedl 19 times for 203 yards and scored once. Alphonso Andrews rushed 14 times for 78 yards and scored twice.  The Titans were runner-up in Class 2 a year ago, losing to Lamar, but finish their first year in Class 3 with a 13-2 record.

Class 1–Hayti over Lincoln 44-0.  Hayti’s closes playoff victory was a 21-point advantage.  The closest any team got to Hayti during the regular season was 26.  It was another dominating win as Hayti completes a perfect 15-0 season. Senior Ivory Winters ran for a 53-yard TD rush in the first quarter and also returned a fumble 39 yards for a TD in the second quarter.  Winters is committed to Indiana.

CBC holds off late Rockhurst rally to claim Class 6 football title. Mound City returns to the top of 8-man

November 25, 2018 By Bill Pollock

CBC repeated as Class 6 state champs with a 45-21 victory of Rockhurst Saturday at Faurot Field in Columbia. The Cadets got a much better effort from the Hawklets after an early season 35-point drubbing. After jumping out to a 21-0 lead, CBC saw their lead cut to 21-14 at the half. Rockhurst closed again to 28-21 with just under 12 minutes left in the third quarter.

CBC quarterback Brett Gabbert, the younger brother of former Mizzou and NFL QB Blaine Gabbert, threw for four touchdowns and 311 yards. He’s committed to playing college ball at Miami of Ohio.

Rockhurst, a perennial Missouri High School powerhouse, has now gone eight years without a state title. Longtime Rockhurst head coach Tony Severino has not announced if he will return in 2019 for his 37th season.

Missouri lawmaker says referees and sports officials need more protection (AUDIO)

August 29, 2018 By Brian Hauswirth

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) says some football games across the state are being moved to Thursdays this fall because of fewer officiating crews.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson shakes hands with state senators on June 11, 2018, before he addressed a joint session of the Legislature (file photo courtesy of Tim Bommel at House Communications)

State Rep. Jerome Barnes, D-Raytown, who served as a referee for about 26 years, says referees and sports officials are berated by fans.

Barnes tells Missourinet officials have been under attack.

“Verbal attack, physical attacks and the good officials are saying, hey, I don’t have to put up with this,” Barnes says.

Barnes says if he beats Libertarian nominee Jeremy Utterback in November, he’ll file legislation again aimed at providing better protection for referees.

His bill would add referees to the “special victim” classification, under state law.

Barnes’ proposal would include all levels of sports competition.

The current law includes occupations like law enforcement officers, probation and parole officers, firefighters and emergency room personnel.

It also includes elderly residents and those with disabilities.

Barnes, who’s finishing his first term in the Missouri House, says the General Assembly shouldn’t wait until a sports official is brutally attacked or killed before taking action to protect them.

He notes a referee in Raytown was attacked in January, during a JV girls basketball game.

“Close to halftime, one of the fans did not like how the referee was calling the game and went out, come out of the stands, went down on the (basketball) floor and knocked the referee out,” says Barnes.

Representative Barnes says he’s scheduled to meet with Governor Parson’s office during the September veto session in Jefferson City, to discuss the bill and request the governor’s assistance with it.

“I’m just going to ask him if he would support it, would he speak on it, if he would just speak on it, you know say something about it,” Barnes says. “I’m just trying to get all the support I can get.”

The governor’s office tells Missourinet that Governor Parson’s legislative director, Justin Alferman, and legislative aide Jeff Earl will be involved in the September 12 meeting.

As for MSHSAA, association communications director Jason West says some football games in the St. Louis region and throughout Missouri have been moved to Thursdays this fall, due to the lack of officials.

While West doesn’t know how many games are being moved to Thursdays because of a lack of officials, he also notes another factor in the decreasing number of officials is an increase in Missouri high school teams playing out-of-state opponents.

Many St. Louis area teams schedule Illinois opponents, and teams in western Missouri often play Kansas schools.

West also notes playing on Thursday nights has become more popular in recent years.

West tells Missourinet the number of registered officials for football has dropped from 1,488 to 1,480 this year.

He also notes MSHSAA is trying to recruit new officials.

The issue has come up in previous years at the Missouri Capitol, including in 2015, when testimony indicated soccer referees were especially needed.
