U.S. Rep. Mark Alford, R-Mo., has introduced legislation to protect federal workers from financial hardship during government shutdowns.
Alford said federal employees should not face lasting financial consequences because of funding lapses in Washington.
“So, this would prevent adverse credit reporting tied to missed payments,” Alford said. “So, if any federal employee misses a payment during a shutdown, they would not be penalized for that necessarily. It would provide some forbearance on foreclosures or evictions, and it would waive fees and penalties for late payments.”
The legislation would also allow certain federally backed loan payments to be temporarily postponed and waive some fees and penalties tied to delayed payments.
“We would like our federal employees, all 28,000 of them here in Kansas City and really all over the country, to be protected when it comes to their financial dealings and their credit,” Alford said.
The bill has been introduced in the House and is awaiting further action from Congress.
