Missouri Prison Research Program Promotes Calmer, Safer Facilities (LISTEN)

Four Missouri prisons are trying out a prison reform technique aimed at creating a calmer, safer environment.

University of Missouri Social Work Professor Kelli Canada says they’re using methods that worked well in Scandinavian prisons. She says some of the changes are physical things like softening the paint color in a wing of the prison. She notes a second, and very powerful aspect involves adjusting the way prison staff and inmates communicate with each other.
