Early voting is underway across Missouri ahead of the Aug. 4 primary election, with voters set to decide four proposed constitutional amendments covering taxes, elections and state programs.
Secretary of State Denny Hoskins said Missouri voters can choose a party ballot in the primary election or request a nonpartisan ballot that includes constitutional amendments and local ballot issues.
“In the primary election, they ask what party you’re affiliated with, and you can either choose a party ballot or you could actually choose a non-party ballot and just vote on the constitutional amendments and other local election ballot issues that are on the ballot,” Hoskins told Missourinet.
The four statewide amendments address funding for state parks and conservation programs, the election of the Jackson County assessor, changes to Missouri’s initiative petition process and a proposal to phase out the state’s individual income tax.
Hoskins also reminded voters of the different ways they can cast a ballot.
“They can either vote in person, they can vote absentee, they can request a mail-in ballot,” Hoskins said. “Also in the state of Missouri, one of the safeguards we have on election integrity is basically requiring a mail-in ballot to be notarized.”
Hoskins said Amendment 4 would make changes to the initiative petition process, while Amendment 5 would phase out Missouri’s income tax and offset the reductions with a sales tax expansion.
