Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across Missouri Monday and into early Tuesday – prompting flood watches for parts of the state.
The National Weather Service says a flood watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for portions of central and eastern Missouri. Areas in western Missouri, including the Kansas City region, remain under a flood watch through Tuesday morning.
Meteorologist Mark Burchfield told Missourinet that some areas have already picked up significant rainfall, with more expected.
“So far, we’ve seen areas pick up between one to two inches of rain, and we do believe that as that continues through the morning, there could be some locations that pick-up total-wise anywhere between three to locally five inches of rain,” he said.
Burchfield said storms may repeatedly affect the same locations, increasing the potential for flash flooding.
“Especially north of Kansas City. That area had seen heavy rainfall a few days ago, and that area is a little more saturated than locations further south,” he said. “We are concerned, just given the amount of rain that could fall this morning, that those areas will receive some flash flooding.”
In addition to heavy rain, the storms could produce damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes. According to Burchfield, a stronger round of storms is expected Monday night in the Kansas City area.
“That area could produce damaging winds, very large hail, tornado threat. All of that is in play for that area tonight,” he said.
The severe weather threat follows a weekend storm that dropped nearly nine inches of rain in Grundy County in northwest Missouri, setting a record that dates back to the 1800s.
