The National Weather Service so far has confirmed several tornadoes touched down in Missouri.
The latest includes three additional tornadoes in Morgan County from the April 17th storms. An EF-0 tornado west-northwest of Gravois Mills damaged barns and trees, while an EF-1 north of Gravois Mills damaged homes and outbuildings. Another EF-0 tornado north of Barnett bent metal structures and downed trees.
Another EF-0 tornado touched down in central Missouri Friday night, tracking from Cole County through Boone and Callaway counties, crossing the Missouri River near Hartsburg toward Fulton. The National Weather Service said winds around 85 mph caused scattered tree damage and partially tore the roof off a hangar at the Fulton-Elton Hensley Memorial Airport, though impacts in populated areas were limited.
Tornadoes have already been confirmed in Cass, Lincoln, Warren, and Benton counties.
The Warsaw area in Benton County continues to clean up after two tornadoes that ripped through Friday night. Brenda Hilburn is 911 Director for Benton County.
“We had no injuries, no loss of life,” she told Missourinet. “We have had multiple outbuildings, shops, metal buildings, things like that, storage units that have been completely destroyed. No major structural damage to any residential home.”
Warsaw High School held classes Tuesday, despite heavy damage to one of the buildings. Superintendent Scott Gemes described what happened.
“One of our roofs, kind of our annex building — we call that the art and science building,” Gemes said. “The roof got ripped off of it and had some major damage there.”
That building is now closed for the rest of the school year.
“I’m meeting with my middle school principal, high school principal, and coming up with a plan,” Gemes said. “We’ve got some rooms that we might be able to share and might be able to move – shuffle some people around.”
Rainwater also poured into the high school gym. Gemes said they’re working to get the floor dried out so that it does not bubble up.
Several firefighters from the Gravois Mills Fire Protection District had to take shelter from one of the tornadoes in a home where they had been battling a fire.
The crews responded around 6:30 p.m. to a structure fire north of Gravois Mills, where they quickly knocked down the main flames. About 40 minutes later, they moved to the basement as heavy rain and high winds moved in. After the storm passed, crews resumed work. The fire is believed to have been caused by lightning.
Power was also knocked out to almost all of the town of Stover.
