U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt’s name has emerged for a key cabinet position in Washington, D.C.
Last week, President Trump fired U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi – leaving the top job open. National media reports have put Schmitt’s name on the list as a potential replacement for Bondi.
Schmitt, R-Missouri, a close Trump ally, served as the state’s Attorney General before being elected to his current position. He’s also been a key U.S. Senate member to help drive Trump’s agenda through the upper chamber.
The U.S. Senate gets to decide whether to back Trump’s pick.
Taking another Republican out of the U.S. Senate would make party margins tighten even further before the November election. If Schmitt departs the office, Gov. Mike Kehoe, a fellow Republican, would get to decide who replaces him. So the position would safely continue in Republican hands.
Missourinet contacted Schmitt’s office last week to ask if he’s in the running and whether he wants the job. There’s been no response yet from his office.
