Gov. Mike Kehoe is watching the U.S. Justice Department’s interest in the state’s lawsuit against the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA).
Federal prosecutors have intervened in the case and are asking a court to stop MSHSAA’s governing body from excluding board candidates based on race or sex. Gov. Kehoe sounded cautiously optimistic about the latest development in an exclusive interview with Missourinet.
“Certainly, we don’t want discriminatory practices in a taxpayer-funded agency,” he said. “That’s something that we hope gets some scrutiny and make sure that we get it cleaned up.”
The legal battle centers around a Missouri man who was barred from running for an at-large seat on MSHSAA’s board because association rules favor candidates of an underrepresented gender or ethnicity.
