U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, R-Mo. plans to retire and will not seek another term in Congress.

The Wall Street Journal reports the Northwest Missouri Republican has decided to step aside after representing Missouri’s 6th Congressional District since 2001.

Graves told the Journal he recently filed for re‑election but ultimately decided it was time to step down and consider the next chapter of his life.

Graves, 62, is currently chairman of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and has served in Congress for more than two decades.

“Congressman Sam Graves has been a steady and principled leader for Missouri and a true partner to the engineering and infrastructure community. As Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he brought a practical, results-driven approach that prioritized real projects and real outcomes. He understood that strong infrastructure is the backbone of economic growth,” said Morgan Mundell, president and CEO of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Missouri.

Graves’ retirement sets up an open race for the solidly Republican district in northern Missouri, with candidate filing scheduled to close March 31st.
