Missouri lawmakers are considering a plan to tighten insurance rules for app‑based delivery drivers.
The Senate Bill sponsored by Sen. Kurtis Gregory, R-Marshall, would set statewide standards for companies like DoorDash and Spark to ensure drivers have proper coverage while they’re on the app or making deliveries.
“What I want to end up with is making sure that the people of the state of Missouri have adequate coverage at all times,” said Gregory. “It’s been around before and we’re taking a look at it again.”
Jeremy LaFaver, representing DoorDash, spoke against the bill in its current form. He said he wants to work with Gregory to change the wording so that coverage is required from log on through a short post-delivery window.
“What we’d like to see is that the commercial insurance starts as soon as I click that I’m dashing or sparking or whatever the thing is and then extend for some limited period of time after the delivery,” said LaFaver.
Jorgan Schlemeier, representing Walmart, testified against the bill.
“I think the key point is, when does a person stop using their car for personal use, and when does it start becoming commercial use?”
The Senate Insurance and Banking Committee could vote on the bill soon.
