U.S. Senator Josh Hawley continues to support President Trump as U.S. forces launched an attack against Iran that began this weekend and continues. He told Missourinet two days before the military campaign began that it’s crucial the Islamic republic not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
“The president has said to Iran that we’re not going to let them have a nuclear bomb, which I think is exactly the right position,” Hawley said. “They need to make a deal to give up their nuclear program, which of course is what the president has been saying for a year and a half now.”
Iran has since retaliated by launching air strikes against several Middle Eastern countries, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Four U.S. service members have been killed so far.
Hawley called Iran a “terrible and evil regime.”
“I mean, there is no doubt about that,” he said. “And I think we as the United States, with moral clarity, speak to that and say that this is a terrorist regime. It’s an evil regime. It really is an illegitimate regime.”
As for regime change, Hawley said that should be the responsibility of the Iranian people.
“I mean, ultimately, that’s their decision,” he said. “As it relates to our policy, we can speak with moral clarity to that. And in terms of what we do with our military, we can make it really clear we’re going to defend our national interests. We are not going to allow ourselves to be sucked into more forever Middle East wars, which is one of the reasons why we’re not going to allow Iran to develop a nuclear bomb.”
U.S. and Israeli forces began bombing Iran on Saturday, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and other top leaders. B-2 stealth bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri have been taking part in the attacks on Iran.
