Members of Missouri’s congressional delegation are sounding off on the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling striking down many of President Trump’s tariffs, which included those imposed on China.

Democrat Emanuel Cleaver of Kansas City calls it a great day for Missouri’s farmers.

“China buys a whopping $24 billion every year, $24 billion,” Cleaver said. “A big chunk of that goes to Missouri farmers.”

China halted U.S. soybean purchases for several months last year, including soybeans grown in Missouri.

Republican Congressman Eric Burlison of southwest Missouri defended President Trump’s tariffs policy.

“Trump’s goal is not to tax in order to generate revenue. His goal is to right-size the imbalance and the trade imbalances that we have with other countries,” Burlison told Missourinet. “I think that he needs to have the tools in place to be able to do that.”

So what’s next? Several Republican members of Congress, including Burlison, want to file legislation that would reimpose those tariffs.

“And I do think that the Legislature has a role in this to play,” he said. “I think that strategically Trump has been on the right path, and he’s achieved a lot of a lot of victories in our international trade through the tariffs.”

Cleaver told Missourinet that Congress passing tariffs would at least be a better approach than one man imposing them on the world. But he still thinks tariffs will hurt Missouri farmers if they’re reimposed.
