Missourians may not be able to order Kansas City Chiefs license plates much longer under a new proposal moving through the Legislature.

Missouri House Speaker Pro‑Tem Chad Perkins, R-Bowling Green, told Missourinet that he filed the bill after the Chiefs announced plans to move to a new stadium in Kansas for the 2031 season.

“If I’ve given you everything you ask and treated you like a little princess and you leave anyway, then maybe I need to take a different tactic,” said Perkins.

Perkins said license plates belong to the state of Missouri.

“But if you’re going to leave and go to Kansas, then why are we giving out license plates for a business that’s based in Kansas,” asked Perkins.

And he said he’d even take the idea a step further.

“Arrowhead Stadium’s not owned by the Chiefs, it’s owned by the Jackson County Sports Authority,” said Perkins. “If I were the Jackson County Sports Authority, I’d tell him, get out right now. Just get your stuff and get out now. Go play football at a high school field in Overland Park. I don’t care. Get out. And you can sue me and we can go to court, and I think a Missouri jury might just agree with me right now, right?”

Under the bill, license plates issued before the 2026 cutoff would remain valid until they expire or are surrendered.

The bill would terminate Missouri’s emblem agreement with the team and prevent any new Chiefs-branded plates from being issued.
