Missouri pharmacists are sorting through Trump RX, which went live last week. Ron Fitzwater, CEO of the Missouri Pharmacy Association, compliments the Trump Administration on trying to address high prescription drug prices. But he said there is some frustration among pharmacists with Trump RX.

“Well, essentially, it gives the appearance, at least in these early stages, that it’s just another discount card program and there are other discount cards out there, like Good RX,” Fitzwater told Missourinet.

The early reviews from Fitzwater and other Missouri pharmacists are mixed. He also told Missourinet that Trump RX does offer significant discounts on several drugs, but many of them require out-of-pocket payments not covered by employer health insurance plans.

“We compliment them in trying to address the high cost of drugs, but I don’t know how broadly this is going to be beneficial to patients,” he said. “Most of us are on some form of a health insurance program.”

Some of the discounts offered on name-brand drugs through Trump RX are not cheaper than some generic versions of the same drugs.

“Yeah, I think the pharmacists that I’ve talked to indicated that was the case in some areas,” Fitzwater said. “Again, it’s a limited number of drugs on there right now (43), but the savings seem to be on the higher priced branded drugs.”

The upside — there are some genuine savings available on Trump RX.

“I would think anybody in a health savings account, if you’re buying your drugs direct, this may be a benefit because you’re not running it against an insurance card, anyways,” said Fitzwater.

Also, Trump RX provides discounts on some IVF and weight loss drugs that are mostly not covered by health insurance plans.

Fitzwater said overall, more data is needed to decide if Trump RX offers a long-term solution to reducing drug prices in America.
