(Columbia, MO) —  Looking for ways to boost the romance in your relationship, beyond Valentine’s Day flowers and candy?  University of Missouri, Human Development and Family Science Associate Professor Kale Monk has come up with a list of ten ideas.

  1. Engage in regular relationship maintenance
  2. Build a solid foundation of friendship and admiration
  3. Respond appropriately to bids for connection
  4. Be “wary” of soulmates
  5. Consider your attributions
  6. “Go to the balcony” for an adult timeout
  7. Couples who play together, stay together
  8. Use social media sparingly
  9. Express gratitude
  10. Don’t be afraid to seek help

Monk notes clear expectations are important for couples celebrating Valentine’s Day.  “We can’t expect our partners to read our minds,” says Monk.  He says it’s best to communicate clearly about how you both expect to celebrate Valentine’s Day and other holidays as well.
