Most of Missouri’s congressional delegation voted along party lines on the funding bill that ended the latest government shutdown. U.S. Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo. 7th District, broke rank and voted “no.”
“By and large, I’d say the overall package is less than what we’ve spent before. So that’s the one good thing,” Burlison told St. Louis radio station KFTK. “There was a lot of really bad earmarks in the bill, which is why I didn’t support it.”
He said the agreement crafted by the U.S. Senate included “swampy” earmarks demanded by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York.
“Half a million dollars for the new Immigrant Community Empowerment Center in New York City,” he said. “Two dozen earmarks from different Democrat senators that went to clinics in their district that do gender affirming care. You had $5 billion that was sent for a resettlement fund. We didn’t learn our lesson with the Somali refugees. We’re going to spend more money to resettle people into the United States.”
Meanwhile, Missouri U.S. House Democrats Wesley Bell and Emanuel Cleaver also voted “no,” but for different reasons.
“I cannot in good conscience vote to continue funding for the Department of Homeland Security as federal agents gun down Americans and undermine the constitutional rights of our fellow citizens. For that reason, I voted against today’s appropriations package,” Cleaver said on X, formerly Twitter.
Bell also posted on X:
“I voted NO two weeks ago, I voted NO today, and will continue to vote NO for any ICE funding. The lawlessness needs to stop.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Mark Alford, R-Mo. 4th District, posted his support for the stopgap bill:
“It’s a done deal! Honored to be a member of @HouseAppropsGOP to deliver almost $23 million for MO-04 in Community Project Funding for fiscal year 2026. America is back!”
President Trump signed the spending bill late Tuesday.
