U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, defended the Trump administration’s deportation efforts and argued that unrest in Minneapolis stems from weakened border enforcement under former President Joe Biden.
“But the story of what’s happening in Minneapolis didn’t begin last month,” said Schmitt. “It began on January 20th, 2021, the day Joe Biden became president. They intentionally opened our border to a full-scale invasion. It was the most egregious betrayal of federal law in American history.”
Schmitt warned that Democrats are poised to shut down the federal government to stop those enforcement actions.
“They demand that we cripple federal law enforcement’s ability to enforce our immigration laws,” said Schmitt. “This is not about oversight. It’s about paralysis. And the objective is mass amnesty, rewarding those who broke the law and punishing the men and women sworn to enforce it.”
Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver said the ICE shootings in Minnesota are “unnecessary,” “deeply disturbing,” and proof that federal immigration enforcement is “out of control.” He called for independent investigations and demands Congress rein in what he describes as a reckless and dangerous agenda,” said Cleaver, a Democrat from Kansas City.
Other Democrats are saying they’re prepared to force a shutdown because they want new limits on ICE and broader reforms to the Department of Homeland Security after a series of deadly immigration‑agent shootings in Minnesota.
