The sale of lab-grown meat would be banned in Missouri under a handful of state House bills. One of them, HB 2769, is sponsored by State Rep. Brad Pollitt, R-Sedalia.

“I think this protects the farmer (and) the ag community, which puts $93 billion into our state economy every year,” Pollitt told Missourinet. “It protects them from an overtake of this down the road.”

Pollitt said based on what he’s heard, lab-grown meat could become a competitive threat to meat from livestock in about ten years. He was also asked by Missourinet if lab-grown meat qualifies as ultra processed food, which the USDA and HHS are discouraging people from eating.

“Some folks are nervous about what may go into our livestock through our health plans for our livestock,” Pollitt said. “Whether that’s chicken, poultry, sheep, cattle that you’re going to grow it in a dish, or you’re going to try to produce it in a lab somewhere, there’s a whole lot more stuff that has to go in(to) that in order to make it grow.”

Similar House bills have been filed by other lawmakers, but no hearings have yet been scheduled.
