If you think it was cold this past weekend, brace yourself because it could be even colder this coming weekend.
Raychel Nelson is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in southwest Missouri’s Springfield.
“Right now it’s looking like we will have low temperatures Saturday night that could be down to -10 degrees in the northern portion of Missouri and then right around 10 above zero in the south – so kind of a gradient from -10 to 10,” she told Missourinet. “And then on, going into Sunday, our highs Sunday look to be between 10 and 20 degrees.”
She also told Missourinet that precipitation chances are low but would most likely be all snow.
“If the system just decides to sort of move further from where they’re looking like right now, if they were to move further north, there would be a chance for ice, bigger chance for ice,” she said. “But at the moment it’s looking like it would be all snow.”
Current models show that southern Missouri would likely get most of the snowfall, with smaller accumulations further north. Before the bitter cold arrives it should warm up a bit first.
“Going into Wednesday, we do get some highs up into the 30s and 40s and again on Thursday, and then we’ll start going back down on Friday,” Nelson said. “Friday will still be around normal. We’re looking at highs in the high 30s to low 40s and then after that we will start our plummet into the colder temperatures over the weekend.”
But the extreme cold should not last long – Nelson said a warming trend is expected early next week.
