Time is running out for travelers who don’t have a REAL ID.

Starting February 1st, TSA will charge a 45-dollar ConfirmID fee to anyone flying without one.

Missouri Department of Revenue Director Trish Vincent told Missourinet that getting a REAL ID now is much cheaper than paying that fee—and it ensures you’re ready for future travel requirements.

“It’s a nominal fee for a three to six year, it’s like $18.00,” said Vincent. “So, you know, compared to $45.00, right, you know that’s a bargain.”

Vincent said REAL ID makes flying easier.

“There’s no worry. I have no idea what the TSA $45.00 extra to get on a plane (is),” said Vincent. “You may have to spend more time. I’m not sure what it is, but if you have a real ID then you’ve got what you need in your hand to get on an airplane.”

The number of Missourians getting a REAL ID is up slightly.

Vincent told Missourinet that back in July the number was under fifty percent.

“And now we’re at 53.83%,” said Vincent. “Which means we’ve got about 2.8 million valid compliant either driver’s license or ID or non-driver’s license and you know it’s it’s a customer’s choice; it’s a citizen’s choice.”

Vincent said to get a REAL ID you will need to bring in your birth certificate, social security number and proof of residency, and you don’t have to wait for your license to expire—REAL IDs are available anytime at your local DMV.
