(Jefferson City, MO) — Flu activity is high in Missouri, according to Health and Senior Services Epidemiologist Nathan Koffarnus. He says to date, more than 9,200 cases of the flu have been reported, along with 147 hospitalizations and five deaths. He says the number of confirmed flu cases doubled in the past week and have been reported in early every Missouri county. Koffarnus notes it’s likely just the tip of the iceberg because the numbers to not reflect those who do not get tested for the flu. State health officials will release new data January 5th.
State health officials remind Missourians that it is not too late to get a flu shot and still have some protection from the virus. Koffarnus recommends those who are ill stay home from work or school until they recover, noting it’s the best way to prevent the spread of the virus.
