The American Red Cross is asking Missourians to roll up their sleeves after early December storms canceled several blood drives across the state

Jill Eaves with the Red Cross told Missourinet that blood donations are always important, but especially during December and January when supplies run low.

“Just December 1st and 2nd, we had drives that were cancelled in those two days,” said Eaves. “We were expecting around 300 units and because of the weather, they got cancelled. So that’s 300 units that didn’t get put out.”

Eaves said certain blood types are especially needed right now.

“Types O positive, O negative, B negative are especially needed now,” said Eaves. “Patients who are needing a blood are cancer patients, childbirth complications. One in seven patients entering a hospital are going to need a blood transfusion.”

Eaves told Missourinet that even if you can’t donate blood, there are other ways to help.

“You can give the gift of time,” said Eaves. “So, we are always looking for blood ambassadors. We’re looking for volunteers, transportation specialists. And you don’t have to know anything. We have some of the best teachers and volunteers. And we’ll get you right up to speed.”

Eaves said to schedule a blood or platelet donation appointment use the Red Cross Blood Donor App or visit RedCrossBlood.org.

As an added thank-you, anyone who donates blood or platelets between January 1st and 25th will be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl 60 in California.
