Southern Boone R-1, located in central Missouri’s Ashland, won’t be switching to a four-day school week—at least not yet. The Board of Education voted Monday night to table the decision, keeping the district on a traditional five-day schedule for the 2026–2027 school year.
Board President Amy Beggeman said there were several reasons behind the move, including uncertainty in state funding, the need to evaluate calendar options tied to salary incentives, and a lack of sufficient data on how a four-day week would impact students and staff.
“The fact that there were insufficient data points at this time to fully understand the impact of the four-day school week, not only to staff retention but also to our students,” Beggeman said.
In a press release, district leaders emphasized that any future decision will be informed, sustainable, and in the best interest of students, staff, and the community.
“We appreciate all of the comments that have come to us, whether in person, during our forums here this evening or via email,” Beggeman added.
The district said it will continue gathering feedback and reviewing data while exploring ways to boost teacher pay and strengthen recruitment. Families and staff are encouraged to stay engaged as discussions continue.
