Fall enrollment at Missouri’s institutions of higher learning is down slightly, just under 1% compared to 2024.

Veronica Gielazauskas, Assistant Commissioner for Performance and Strategy at the Missouri Dept. of Higher Education and Workforce Development, said, though, that the numbers remain relatively high.

“We can see that there were more than 315,000 students represented in the three sectors of our two-year public institutions, our four-year public institutions, and our four-year independent institutions in this state over the year,” she told the Coordinating Board of Higher Education this week.

The declines were limited to four-year public and private universities, but not to community and technical colleges.

“The two-year public institutions reported growth in both the one-year percent change and the five-year change where our public universities were really flat or slightly declining in the last year,” Gielazauskas said.

Fall enrollment at two-year community and technical colleges is 5% higher than it was a year ago.

Meanwhile, there’s been a dramatic drop in the number of international students enrolled at Missouri’s institutions of higher learning.

“We can look at this measure for our four-year public institutions based on the data that we are provided,” Gielazauskas said. “And compared to fall of 2024, there was a decline of 32% in international headcount enrollment over the year, which represents a decrease of approximately 3,500 students statewide.”

There were other increases in data aside from two-year colleges. Gielazauskas said Black student enrollment this fall is 9% higher than it was a year ago, while Hispanic enrollment is 30% higher than it was in 2020.
