U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Mo. 2nd District, isn’t mincing words about the state of mail delivery.
Wagner told Missourinet that the new Postmaster General, David Steiner, met last week with Missouri and Illinois lawmakers and talked about mail service in the region. He also admitted to what Wagner called ‘embarrassing service failures,’ especially here in the heart of the country.
“Their outdated facilities were in terrible shape,” said Wagner. “Illogical networks with zero strategic planning, terrible truancy and staffing problems, a real culture problem when it came to their employees across the board.”
Wagner said for the last several years severe dysfunction has plagued service in the St. Louis area and Steiner said the postal service is looking at resolving severe delays.
“I can tell you that the United States Postal Service has gotten rid of a number of superfluous facilities that just frankly contributed to the delays,” said Wagner. “They significantly ramped up capacity in their core locations.”
Wagner told Missourinet that the United States Postal Service should be held accountable for appalling mail delivery issues that have impacted many families, businesses, and communities in the greater St. Louis area.
“They have reformed their leadership and they’re now providing regular updates to us,” said Wagner. “The new Postmaster General, Steiner promised that he would report back after the holiday peak season with an honest assessment of how they did,” said Wagner.
Wagner also said there were several key takeaways from the meeting with Stener that include improved on-time delivery rates, enhanced customer service, better absentee ballot tracking, and strategic mail rerouting to relieve congestion.
Wagner said it could take up to three years for residents to see the full impact of the changes.
