Some good news for those Missourians getting ready to go to the grocery store and buy food for Thanksgiving.

Garrett Hawkins, President of the Missouri Farm Bureau told Missourinet that the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual survey shows that a holiday feast for 10 will cost less than last year.

“You think about the traditional Thanksgiving meal of Turkey and sweet potatoes or mashed potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie, etcetera,” said Hawkins. “The overall cost of a typical dinner is down to $55 roughly on average. And in Missouri we’re about $10 under the national average.”

Hawkins said the price dip is thanks in large part to lower turkey prices.

“The price overall was down about 16% on average making a 16-pound Turkey just over $21,” said Hawkins. “The components of stuffing mix are down frozen pie crusts are down the dairy components are up just slightly just about 3%.”

Hawkins told Missourient that a few items did go up, but overall, the news is positive.

“Sweet potatoes are up in price,” said Hawkins. “Celery is up, so you see little fluctuations, not a lot. I think the biggest driver that folks need to be aware of is the price of Turkey coming down a bit and that’s helping bring down the overall cost of the meal.”

According to Hawkins about half of items in the survey decreased in price this year.
