A Missouri lawmaker wants the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) to make an exception for Missouri State University in Springfield.
The Bears are in their first season as a Football Bowl Subdivision team, but NCAA rules block transitioning programs from postseason play for two years.
State Rep. and Missouri State alum Melanie Stinnett, R-Springfield, told Missourinet that restriction hurts athletes’ chances to shine on a national stage.
“And limits their potential for, you know, the NFL and other scouts to see what they are capable of,” said Stinnett. “These students work really hard. They commit a lot of their lives and efforts toward their sport, and it is a huge thing for them to be able to be seen at that level in those bowl games.”
Stinnett has asked NCAA President Charlie Baker to grant a waiver.
“Put simply, let the Bears play,” she said in a letter to Baker.
Stinnett told Missourinet that her letter has sparked a bigger conversation, one that’s gaining support.
“Seeing Congressman (Eric) Burlison come out with a letter as well,” said Stinnett. “Our auditor, Scott Fitzpatrick, who’s also from Southwest Missouri, has written a letter. Also, our office is gathering signatures. You kind of cosign on to our letters. So far, we have quite a few House members that have decided to sign on to that letter.”
Stinnett said this conversation could have a broader impact.
“I think anytime that a single university elevates a conversation, it gives the opportunity for an organization like the NCAA to really take a crucial look,” said Stinnett. “You know, some of their policies have been on the books for decades and things change over the years. So, it is something that I think could spark some change nationwide.”
Stinnett plans to send the letter—along with additional signatures—to the NCAA by week’s end.
Missouri State University has also formally petitioned the NCAA for a waiver.
