Despite the federal government shutdown, active-duty military members have been paid through October 31st.
But will they get paid November 15th?
U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, told Missourinet he doubts it.
“I don’t know how they can. There’s no money,” he said. “I mean, listen, nobody’s (going to) get paid. The air traffic controllers are not getting paid. The FBI agents, our Border Patrol agents, our ICE agents, other federal law enforcement (are) not getting paid. People who need food assistance, the needy – not getting it.”
Hawley also said there is currently no temporary work-around or other source of income that he’s aware of that would allow the Armed Forces to receive their paychecks by next weekend.
“Well, no, I mean the Democrats have voted down bills that would pay the military and (Republicans) have voted to pay the military,” he said. “We have voted to pay air traffic controllers. They voted no. This was wrong on Day One, it is infinitely more wrong on Day 36 or wherever we are now. This needs to end.”
Senate Democrats are refusing to vote in favor of reopening the federal government unless Republicans agree to extend tax credits for the Affordable Care Act.
“I don’t know how much more suffering there needs to be before my Democrat friends decide, ‘You know what? This is really a humanitarian crisis,’ because that’s what we’re facing right now,” Hawley said. “These are Americans who are literally going hungry, Missourians who are going hungry.”
The federal government shutdown began October 1st and is now the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
