As questions grow about who will get paid and who won’t during the federal government shutdown, what about Missourians receiving Social Security payments? West-central Missouri Congressman Mark Alford told Missourinet that he doesn’t know.
During a conference call with reporters on Friday, he blamed Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
“That is all on Chuck Schumer,” said Alford. “He has the power right now to unlock this government, to make sure that people receive their Social Security payments. I hope that people are going to get their Social Security payments. I can’t guarantee it. But again, that’s on Chuck Schumer.”
Congressman Alford’s office later emailed Missourinet and said Social Security payments should continue during the federal government shutdown, since the program is funded through mandatory spending and not annual appropriations.
Alford’s office notes that while payments are expected to go out on time, issues or delays could still occur, and they’re prepared to assist Missourians who experience disruptions.
