Missouri families could soon feel the sting of the federal government shutdown in their wallets and on their dinner tables – if they have not already.

On Thursday, a news release from Gov. Mike Kehoe’s office said Missouri has about 56,000 federal workers who may not get their next scheduled paycheck.

In addition, the governor said the Missouri Department of Social Services cannot issue November SNAP food stamp benefits to more than 667,000 residents without federal funding, and WIC support for nearly 98,000 mothers and children is at risk.

The news release said SNAP benefits are 100% federally funded, with each recipient receiving benefits from the federal government via their Electronic Benefit Transfer card. There is no mechanism for state appropriations to be transferred to cover this funding.

According to Kehoe, Missouri’s Gross State Product is estimated to decline by roughly $232 million each week as the shutdown extends, which could lead to an increase in unemployment of about 800 Missouri workers under a one-month shutdown.

He said the shutdown has impacted Missouri families, small businesses, veterans, and workers across the state—leaving federal workers and military members unpaid and key services unfunded.
