(Columbia, MO) —  Some of Missouri’s craft brewers may be making some business model adjustments due to basic economics.  Sherry Wohlgemuth of the Missouri Brewers Guild says a combination of factors have presented some challenges for brewers across the country this year.  She says some the factors, including higher production costs, are prompting some beer makers to produce fewer versions of their product.  She says it’s an industry that is also sensitive when consumer budgets are tightened, because craft beer tends to have a higher price point.

Wohlgemuth says, however, the state’s craft brew industry is mature and thriving.  She says the state lost a few craft brewers this year, but still has over 170.  The Missouri Brewers Guild says the industry employs over 8,000 people and produced over 300,000 barrels of beer in 2024.  The Guild estimates the annual economic impact to the state at over $1.2 (B) billion.  She also notes the state’s craft brewers have earned a very good reputation in national and international beer making competitions.

Wohlgemuth says while it’s been a challenging year, October is typically a very busy month as numerous Missouri cities host beer-loving Octoberfest celebrations.
