As the government shutdown continues, the Trump Administration is redirecting revenues collected from tariffs to fund WIC – the Women, Infant, and Children’s nutrition program. U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, confirmed the move with Missourinet.
“Thanks to the President, who has transferred money over to the WIC program,” Hawley said. “Listen, I give the President a lot of credit. He’s trying to find ways to make the budget stretch.”
Various estimates had WIC running out of money within the next week or two before the extra funding was announced. The amount of tariff revenue being transferred to WIC has not been announced.
Hawley also said that Trump is planning to use tariff funding to pay military personnel.
“If this shutdown continues, they’ll miss a paycheck, and the president said he’s going to try to use whatever funds he can find that have already been allocated to pay the military. And I salute him for doing that,” he said. “But the truth is, this is ridiculous. This has gone on for what, now, nine days? Ten days? That’s 10 days too long and it’s absurd. It should never have started in the first place.”
Meanwhile, there was another vote Thursday in the U.S. Senate to reopen the federal government – it failed 45 to 54. A 60-vote majority is required to avoid a filibuster.
