President Donald Trump has strongly suggested that he may fire many federal employees furloughed by the government shutdown. As to which federal workers would be fired, Southwest Missouri Congressman Eric Burlison said it would likely be those recommended for termination earlier this year by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
“That’s what I’ve been told is that that that will come into effect,” Burlison told Missourinet affiliate KZRG in Joplin. “Trump means business. They’re salivating at the fact that they have this opportunity.”
Burlison also suggested that if there are mass firings of federal employees, Senate Democrats will only have themselves to blame.
“I think they absolutely forgot the fact that the guy who is the most fiscal conservative person in the world is the OMB director, and (Trump) just gave him the keys to the Kingdom,” Burlison said. “So, I mean absolutely, I think that you’ll start seeing waves of terminations.”
OMB, the Office of Management and Budget, is run by Trump appointee Russell Vought.
DOGE has recommended cutting jobs from several federal departments and agencies, including NASA, the EPA, the Social Security Administration, the IRS, the U.S. Postal Service, USAID, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of War, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the entire Department of Education.
The federal government has been in a partial shutdown since October 1.
