Both U.S. senators from Missouri voted in favor Tuesday of President Donald Trump’s tax megabill.
Sen. Josh Hawley, who criticized the bill’s Medicaid cuts, changed his mind, and supported the bill because he says it includes funding for St. Louis-area victims of radioactive waste exposure.
In a statement on X, the Republican called it “landmark legislation” for Missouri, highlighting its role in delivering, “justice to St. Louis radiation survivors,” providing new health care funding, and tax relief for working families.
Sen. Eric Schmitt said he proudly voted to move forward with Trump’s America First agenda.
“For the first time ever, there’s a federal tax credit for school choice and for people with disabilities,” said Schmitt, a Republican. “Now you can save in the same way you would save for college for the long term needs of a loved one with a disability. We got $10 billion for that home care provision so that individuals with disabilities can have the dignity of being at home when they really need that care the most.”
The final vote was 51-50 with Vice President JD Vance breaking a tie.
The bill now heads to the House, where GOP leaders are trying to get the bill to the White House by July 4.
