U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, is condemning the assassination of a member of the Minnesota legislature over the weekend.
Melissa Hortman, the top Democrat in the Minnesota House, and her husband Mark, were shot to death Saturday at their home in a Minneapolis suburb. Minnesota Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot at their home on Saturday – both are in a hospital and reported to be recovering.
Schmitt told Fox News that both political parties need to speak out against political violence.
“I think now is the time to sort of pump the brakes and let people know that this is completely unacceptable,” he said.
Republicans say there does appear to be an increase in political violence in the U.S.
“As a former prosecutor, as a former Attorney General of Missouri, I wouldn’t want to speculate too much (or) get too far ahead of the investigation,” Schmitt said, “but this clearly looks like a targeted political assassination and there’s just no room in this country for that.”
The suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boeltner, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder.
